The shortage of Registered Nurses (RNs) in the U.S. continues to expand as the COVID-19 crisis drags on. With more than half a million RNs anticipated to retire by 2022, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the need for 1.1 million new RNs for expansion and replacement of retirees. U.S. nursing schools have not been able to keep up with the demand for RNs. Now, with millions of baby boomers retiring, the shortage continues to get worse. Almost half the registered nurses working in the U.S. are 50 years old or more. Fortunately, there are hundreds of thousands of foreign educated RNs working abroad are seeking to immigrate to the U.S.
A Registered Nurse can obtain a permanent residence (green card) to immigrate to the US more easily than almost any other profession. Registered Nurses are classified by the US Department of Labor as a Schedule A shortage occupation which makes it easier for RNs to immigrate to the United States than for individuals in other occupations. Employers can sponsor Registered Nurses for green cards without having to undergo the lengthy and expensive PERM process. However, a foreign-born RN must pass the nursing examination, pass an English examination, obtain a VisaScreen certificate and be sponsored by a US employer to immigrate to the United States.
The process towards Nursing Licensure in the United States of America and Immigration can be really complex, and somewhat discouraging to start with. There is the cumbersome credentialing process, the overwhelming hassle to pass the Board nuring examin, and so on. Each of these challenges comes at different stages and can be real frustrating. However, with a proper guide you can bypass most of these.
